How it works
Teachers and tutors can use these tiles to augment any reading and spelling program.
Parents can use the tiles to reinforce classroom lessons, as well as provide reading and spelling fun. They should encourage the kids to have fun with “word play” by trying to spell any words they wish - even nonsense words - as long as they try to decode them.
Multi-sensory reinforcement is essential to foster phonological awareness and fluency, enabling effective acquisition of our written code so readers of all ages may enjoy the full variety of printed genres.
Although these tiles can be used in a variety of ways to augment any reading or spelling program, over 30 years of experience has proven that sliding, when paired with associative cues such as “open” vowel and “closed” vowel, is a more effective multi-sensory reinforcer than picking up and placing down letters to form words and manipulate phonemes by substituting, adding or deleting letters. Duplicate single vowels and consonants enable students to compare and contrast a few words, as well as to construct multi-syllable words.
The syllable is the basic unit of our spoken and written language. The vowel is the focal point of the syllable, so all vowels are in red to easily distinguish them.
Phonemes (speech sounds) are grouped in the tray according to pattern category, and arranged in alphabetical order for scanning efficiency, as well as reinforcement of alphabetical sequence.
Beginning readers should be urged to use the tiles to sound out words of their choices when writing creatively, and be praised for their efforts. The freedom to write without fear of failure will encourage them to attend to instruction with a heightened awareness of our sound/symbol code. It will also foster creativity. Whereas, the expectation of perfect spelling will stifle creative juices.
If youngsters are distracted by the entire tray of tiles, remove needed tiles and close the tray. Place the tiles in front of the student, consonants on the left and vowels on the right, each in alpha order. Always use alpha order to reinforce the sequence.
Student readers of all ages enjoy sliding these letter tiles to form and modify words.

The Sliding Reading Pattern Letter Tiles were designed by Joan F. Kasner, a Clinical Reading Specialist with over 50 years of experience teaching students with dyslexia and their teachers.
Co-director of the Clinic of the McGlannan School for children with dyslexia and related language problems.
Located in Miami, Florida. Founded in 1964 by Frances McGlannan, nationally recognized for her pioneering work in the diagnosis and education of children with dyslexia.
